At Animals Have Hearts, Too, every rescue reminds us why love and second chances matter. Ernie’s story is one of our favorites.

During one of the harshest winter storms Texas had ever seen, Ernie was found—alone, freezing, and barely clinging to life. He had no shelter, no food, and no one searching for him. He was skin and bones, sipping from a patch of frozen water just to survive.

Where others saw a lost cause, we saw a life worth saving.

Wrapped in blankets and hope, Ernie was rescued and brought to safety. His road to recovery wasn’t easy. He fought starvation, infected wounds, heartworms, and even an enlarged heart. But through it all, Ernie never gave up—and neither did we.

Thanks to a loving foster family and a pack of new dog friends, Ernie got to live a beautiful, joy-filled year. He spent his days chasing sunshine, cuddling with his family, and showing everyone the meaning of true resilience.

Ernie didn’t just survive—he thrived. He reminded us all that with love, patience, and care, every heart can heal.
